Podcast Series The Missing

In this episode we bring you the odd case of Paul Carter, who disappeared during an overnight ferry crossing from Portsmouth to Brittany in April 2007.

It wasn’t Paul’s first time making the trip to the port of Saint-Malo. He’d made the journey several times before for work reasons and was travelling with three colleagues on the night in question. He was last seen at around midnight but by the time the ferry docked the following morning, he had vanished without a trace.

This episode hears from Paul’s mother Theresa. She explains how Paul’s disappearance created a bureaucratic nightmare, where the British police, the French authorities and the ferry operators all refused to take responsib...

A look back...

A look back...

The Missing released its first episode in December 2020. In the four years since, we’ve covered more than seventy missing person cases, across the UK and Ireland. In the course of our work, we’ve spoken to hundreds of people, whose brave and unvarnished testimonies have shone a light on a grim phenomenon that is underreported in our communities.  Some people are overwhelmed following lengthy battles with severe mental health issues, whilst others have found themselves under too much pressure, whether familial or financial. There are those who fall down the rabbit hole of addiction and there are people who simply found themselves in the wrong place, at the wrong time, in the wrong company.  By revisiting some of the interviews we’ve recorded over the past four years we hope to illustrate just some of the myriad of reasons why people go missing and paint a picture of what life is like for the loved ones left behind to pick up the pieces.  This podcast wouldn’t exist without them. Jaime Cheesman

Jaime Cheesman

In this episode, we bring you the sad story of Jaime Cheesman, a sixteen year old girl from Wellingborough who was last seen in Grimsby in November 1993, over thirty years ago.  Jaime was a fiercely independent teenager who decided to leave the home she shared with her father Eric and mother Barbara and move in with a friend of hers in Grimsby before she was even old enough to vote.  This episode hears from Jaime’s father Eric. Eric is now in his eighties. He understands the chances of him learning what became of Jaime are becoming less and less likely as the years pass, but like all families of missing people, he can’t help but hold onto a sliver of hope. Dean Roche

Dean Roche

In this episode we tell the story of Dean Roche, whose unexplained disappearance in Kilkenny, Ireland, has haunted his friends and family for the better part of a decade.  Dean, 31, was very much at a crossroads in his life. He had a storied history of drug abuse and his habit had landed him in prison on several occasions but he very much wanted to turn things around. He had people in his life who depended on him, like his mother Geraldine and his son, Jamie but he was also his own worst enemy and frequently allowed himself to get into scenarios that made being someone they could rely on impossible.  This episode hears from Dean’s friend Damien. The pair grew up together and were very close in their teenage years. Circumstances however, eventually caused them to drift apart. Damien brings us through the bizarre circumstances of Dean’s disappearance and explains why a promise made to Dean’s mother on her deathbed, means he’ll never stop searching for his friend.  For more information on this case, and every episode from every series visit https://themissingpodcast.org And to visit details of the most recent appeals - like the one you may have heard in this episode, please visit : https://missingpeople.org.uk/recent  If you or anyone you know is struggling with drug or alcohol addiction, you can find some useful information here: https://www.talktofrank.com/get-help/what-is-drug-and-alcohol-treatment-like  If you want to listen to The Missing COMPLETELY ad-free, and help to support the show, then please subscribe to our channel. Mark Palmer

Mark Palmer

In this episode, we cover the unusual case of Mark Palmer, a construction worker from Bedfordshire, who vanished in 2019 whilst working overseas in the town of Ontinyent, Spain.  Mark was last seen by his colleagues at 10:30am on the morning of April 27th, a Saturday. Mark had a history of going AWOL for up to 24 hours at a time, so when he failed to return on Sunday, they weren’t immediately concerned. By the time Monday rolled round, there was still no sign of him, so they called the police.  This episode hears from Mark’s sister Claire, who explains her brother’s long history of mental health issues and how they may have played a factor in his disappearance. She talks about travelling to Spain with her husband and the rest of Mark’s family and how within a matter of hours she went from studying for a PHD, to coordinating a sprawling search effort with dozens of volunteers. Cathryn Holdsworth

Cathryn Holdsworth

In this episode, we examine the strange case of Cathryn Holdsworth, a 72 year old woman from Illingford, Halifax, who was last seen in her local supermarket on September 9th, 2017 and has been missing ever since.  Cathryn’s disappearance was reported by her neighbour Martina, who after speaking with the police, used the spare key Cathryn had left with her to enter her home. Martina and her husband searched it from top to bottom and soon realised that not only was Martina there, no one had been for some time.  This episode hears from Martina, as well as Holly Lynch, former MP for Halifax, who was Cathryn’s local representative back in 2017. Holly took a personal interest in Cathryn’s case and the issue of older, vulnerable people in her community in general.
